Railway Precinct
Several different facilities make up the Temora Railway Station Precinct. These include the Railway Temora, a youth space (Platform Y), visitor facilities and a ‘Free Camp’ facility for RV’s and motor homes, linking to Federal Park which includes a sound shell, play equipment and skate park - it truly is a travellers sanctuary.
For travellers passing through or staying in Temora the ‘Free Camp’ facility is an ideal option. Located at the Railway Temora’s doorstep, the facility is an ideal place to stop, shop and enjoy everything that Temora has to offer. The facility is also within walking distance of local parks, cafes and eateries.
The Collection
The Railway Temora collection boasts many pieces from days gone by, all arranged throughout the original railway station building that has recently been renovated. The sections include:
Signal Box Room
Station Masters Office
Main Exhibition Room
Ticket Office
Trackman’s area
Throughout Railway Temora, a wide range of items are on display. Items such as clothing, lanterns, books, signs and badges, right through to tools and objects that had a working life at the precinct such as the original fettler’s trike and the spade that was used to turn the ‘first sod’ of the Cootamundra to Temora railway line.
Be sure to drop back from time to time as the collection is continually growing and changing.
History of the Station
The opening of Temora Railway Station in September 1893 was the start of a rail passenger service that would last for almost a hundred years. The station was a hive of activity during this time as everything from passengers and mail to all manner of freight, everything arriving, and leaving Temora, did so by rail.
Being such a crucial service, the station provided employment for many varied positions, from the Station Master and assistants, right through to clerical staff, switchboard attendant, shunters and guards. All together, these positions provided full time work for over 45 Temora residents for many years.
The passenger service was eventually discontinued in 1984 mainly due to the advancement of the motor vehicle and later with the introduction of air passenger services at Temora Airport. After usage decreased, the station fell into a state of disrepair until August 2014 when Temora Shire Council was awarded a State Government Heritage Grant of $100,000.
The grant allowed Council, Transport NSW and railway volunteers to breathe new life into the station, with the precinct boasting Railway Temora within the refurbished original Railway Station and the still working railway yard.
The Story of “Boofhead”
Railway Temora’s very own adventuring canine.
Learn about ‘Boofhead’ a long legged black and white fox terrier that became known as Temora’s railway dog.
He rode trains from Goulburn in the east to Lake Cargelligo in the west during the 1960’s and became a legend of the rail network.
